Björn Engholm, born 9.11.1939 in Lübeck
Engholm was Minister for Education and Science in the Schmidt cabinet in 1981-82. After the breakup of the SPD-FDP coalition, he was briefly in charge of the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry. Between 1983 and 1988 Engholm was the SPD parliamentary party leader in the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament. In 1988 he was elected Prime Minister of Schleswig-Holstein. In 1991 Engholm became national SPD chairman and in January 1992 declared his willingness to stand for chancellor in the 1994 election to the Bundestag. On 3 May 1993, in connection with the “Barschel affair” and its disclosures, Engholm resigned as SPD chairman, state Prime Minister and candidate for chancellor.
